WHY INCLUSIVE EDUCATION FOR DISABLED CHILDREN IN INDONESIA ?

There are many reasons for inclusive education of disabled children.

The main reason in Indonesia  is  that in most villages there are no schools for special education and parents are not able to pay for a boarding school and don’t like to be separated from there child. As a consequence many of these children are at home  and do not go to school.

An other  reason is that disabled children don’t like to be considered as abnormal children  who are excluded of the normal life of the community .They like to be integrated in social life ,mix and play with other children and have the same opportunities without any discrimination. 

The main objection  against inclusive education is that schools for special education  are better equipped to handle these children  and that here they are more safe and protected against  mishandling  through others. This can be true for severely intellectually or physical disabled in Indonesia  but it is not the case for  deaf and blind children in Indonesia. In nearly all regions of  East Indonesia there is only one school for disabled children, mostly only for  intellectually disabled children in the Kabupaten  town , and there is nothing for all  the other villages.   

Moreover often curricula, books  and facilities  of many schools for special education  are inferior to the books and curricula of ordinary elementary schools.It is not easy to find  employment with a diploma of  a school for special education .

Bhakti Luhur sees as a solution for these  thousands disabled children in so many villages  in East Indonesia , specially the deaf and the blind. ,education packages  which will make it possible that   blind and deaf children  after one year of intensive training   will be included in ordinary grade schools  and finish their education there with a good result.

At the moment a large number of the children are not going to school. A number of them are in regular schools ,but because they are not prepared  to follow the curriculum, not prepared  to learn how to  read and to write they are just taking part in some school activities  without being able to make any real progress. The Bhakti Luhur inclusive education packages  will also help these disabled children and enable them to become fully integrated in the educational progress.

In many countries  like the  U.S. this already  a law: “ Provison that teacher training programs shall include instruction in main streaming children with special needs as well as instruction regarding the IEP process”

The inclusive education program will be implemented by  trained  CBR workers  specially trained  for this task in the villages where the children life. They will also  provide guidance for the children after they have been included in the regular elementary school  and to the teachers who have these children in their class.

One year training enabling a deaf child to follow  classes in a normal grade-school

 Six hundred hours training , 40 weeks  15 hours  a week.

Basic sign language and  PECS included, also books for the teacher  and training books for children .

If needed  the child is provided with a hearing aid.

FOR BLIND CHILDREN.

One year training enabling a blind child to follow  classes in a normal grade-school

 Six hundred hours training , 40 weeks  15 hours  a week.

Braille, brailler, tape recorder, books  and materials for mathematics included.

FOR SLOW LEARNING  CHILDREN.

One year training enabling a slow learning child to follow  classes in normal grade-school

 Six hundred hours training , 40 weeks  15 hours  a week.

Special methodology for reading , writing and mathematics included.

FOR SEVERELY INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED CHILDREN.  CHILDREN.

One year training according mental age   in social competency enabling a SEVERELY disabled child to follow  classes in special schools

 Six hundred hours training , 40 weeks  15 hours  a week.

Psychological tests and special methodology for selfhelp and socialization  included.

Six months training enabling a local trainer  with a high school diploma to implement  the bhaktiluhur  training package for deaf children and to help in adjusting and guiding the children after inclusion in a normal  classes of a grade-school

 Three hundred six hours  training , 12 weeks  30 hours  a week.

For  teachers  the training time will be much less.
